On 15th August, 1969, Abdul Malek, one of the best students of the University of Dhaka, the Oxford of the orient, met martyrdom having been attacked by the Islam-antagonistic forces in TSC on 13th August of the same year. At that time when the whole country was filled with extreme distress, depression and melancholy following the event aforesaid, Farrukh Ahmad, one of the mainstream and leading poet of Bengali language and literature welcomed martyrdom of Abdul Malek in his own language. By being informed of Malek’s martyrdom, Maulana Syed Abul A’la Moududi, the greatest Islamic thinker of the twentieth century, very confidently said- “Abdul Malek is probably the first martyr of Islam in this country but surely not the final one”. Such was also the fact indeed!!!
Bangladesh became independent in 1971 being freed from all irons of slavery. People thought “slavery, downfall and breakdown are no more now; here begins an endless way of victory, a time to pave the way for a new era”. But things happen unlike the way people think. This is why the countrymen noticed with wonder how thousand crore taka worthy of weapons, food and resources loaded onto trucks are being looted by and shifted to India, the very neighboring country of Bangladesh, how our independence is being enslaved by a ‘force’ to have backed our liberation war, how country’s young segment is being associated with crimes and how a gang of addicted, armed and decaying youths in despair is being generated in the nation who always went on committing heinous acts of hijacking and terrorism. The situation went so deadly that no wink of sleep was there in the eyes of the fathers, no smile of joy in the face of the mothers and no cherished hope in the minds of the sisters. The only query was- “what is in store for this new generation and who will rescue them from such dark of disappointment?”. In such a case of urgency, some sobering and dedicated youths towards enlightenment established Bangladesh Islami Chhatrashibir, a promising and freedom-wishing Caravan to the students of Bangladesh, on the premises of the Central Mosque of Dhaka University on 6th February, 1977.
Conflict between truth and falsehood is ever-eternal in this earth. Falsehood can never tolerate the truth and similarly the ‘ugly’ cannot accept the ‘beautiful’. In the same manner, the communities holding falsehood aloft in Bangladesh could not endure Chhatrashibir’s journey towards light. For this cruel reality, conflicts began to take place between truth and falsehood and in between the ‘ugly’ and the ‘beautiful’ since 1977 when Chhatrashibir came into being. Shibir activists started to sustain assault and battery. The jobs of spreading false propaganda, administering threats and attacks, false filing of cases and terrorist preventive actions started to be committed against the freedom-longing ‘Caravan’ which emerged to lead the misled youths aright. Shibir activists started to lose different limbs and parts of their body including hands, legs and eyes etc making increase in injured and ‘vein-cut’ youths in Caravan of Shibir. Gradually, the beautiful premises of different institutions plus highways began to turn red with pure blood of the leaders as well as activists of Shibir. On 11th March, 1982, 3 brethren of Chhatrashibir were added to the queue of this martyrdom-oriented Caravan which is inspired by Hazrat Hamza (May Allah be pleased with him). This was just the onset which is still in progress. That day in 1982, as cited above, in a charming morning, Shibir activists underwent a ruthless attack in Motihar Square of Rajshahi University which is one of the country’s leading academic echelons. Three activists of Shibir were killed in cold blood without any incitement from their behalf. This grievous attack left many injured of whom one met martyrdom on 28th December, after several months of the injury. The brutality of ‘Batil force’ (Falsehood) that is exposed that day really beggars description. The head of Shahid Aiyub Ali was ground into powder by placing it between two bricks. What was the offence Aiyub Ali committed? Why did he have to go back to his crying mother at his village in Khustia as a corpse?? Nobody knows the answers to these queries still today.
Sabbir, Hamid, Aiyub and Jabbar passed away following the track trodden by Shahid Abdul Malek. Even so, the Caravan did not stop at all; rather it was always on the run. The queue of the martyrs in this way has more and more been enlarged day by day and the stream of blood flow became swifter. Over time, as many as 139 smiling youngsters joined the queue of the martyrs whereby an unparalleled ‘procession of martyrs’ is formed. Khurshid Alam of Chittagong, Abdul Matin of Chanpainababgonj, Rashidul Hoque, Shish Muhammad, Salim, Shahabuddin and Mustafa Al-Mustafiz of Chittagong accompanied this martyrs’ queue in 1985. Among the martyrs who laid down their lives that day for the sake of upholding dignity of the Holy Quran, there were school-going little kids whose lives were not contaminated with any sort of sinful acts. Shahid Salim Jahangir, Mahfuzul Hoque Chowdhury, Jafar Jahangir and Bakiullah martyred in ’86 left glaring examples of martyrdom behind. Next year, Hafez Abdur Rahim, schoolboy Ameer Hussain and Abdul Aziz, student leader of Karmaikel College, joined the queue. In 1988, Shahid Ainul Hoque, Nasim Uddin Chowdhury, Aminul Islam, Abdus Salam Azad, Aslam Hussain, Asgar Ali and Abu Sayeed Muhammad Sayem made a glorious legend in this regard. In 1989, some sprightly youths like Tareque Ul-Alam, Jashim Uddin Mahmud, Shafiqul Islam, Afaz Uddin Chowdhury, Shihab Uddin, Zahir Uddin Muhammad Liton, Khurshed Alam, Hafez Muhammad Yahya, Ali Hussen, Abdul Khaleque and Mir Ansar Ullah joined this procession of martyrdom being detached from invaluable love and affection of their mothers. Shahid Mujaher Ali and Shahid Khalilur Rahman went for the sake of ‘DEEN’ in the bloodied days of 1990 for the fall of autocracy. In ’91, Sheikh Feroz Mahmud and A K M Golam Faruque departed this life leaving us behind. A heinous event was initiated in the history of Bangladesh on 16th January, 1992, when a subjugated ring of terrorists constituted “Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee” showing gross impunity to the Constitution, human values and democratic sentiment of the country and, in the hands of their accomplices, Shahid Munsoor Ali, Saijuddin and Atiqul Islam Dulal were martyred one by one. Moreover, Shahid Aminul Islam Biman, Iqbal Hussen, Nazrul Karim, Ajibor Rahman, Saiful Islam and Saiful Islam Mamun accepted martyrdom leaving us behind.
The highest number of Shibir activists and leaders were added to the “Procession of Martyrdom” in 1993. Kutub Uddin studying at SSC level, Kazi Musharraf Hussain from the family of a freedom fighter and Muhammad Yahya together with Mustafizur Rahman and Rabiul Islam from Jessore joined this ‘Procession’. They fell victim to the brutality of the opponents while holding a program on the occasion of Shibir’s ‘birth’ Anniversary in Rajshahi University. Saiful Islam from Rangpur, a class nine orphan student Sheikh Amanullah, Dr. Mizanur Rahman Mizan and Burhan Uddin from Chittagong, Shamsujjaman Khan Reza, Kamrujjaman Alam and Sheikh Muzammel Hoque Monju joined the ‘Queue of the martyrs’. On 20th September of the year aforesaid, a Shibir leader and elected GS of Khulna BL College, Munsi Abdul Halim by name, was chopped up and killed throat-slit on the premises of Mosque of the college. Following the event, the newly elected Secretary of literature of Students’ Union of the same college Sheikh Rahmat Ali was martyred. In 1994, Shahid Nurul Alam, Muhammad Yusuf, S M Kawsar, Jafar Alam, Kamrul Islam and the then Acting GS of Khulna BL College Abul Kashem Pathan upgraded them from the ‘queue of the Caravan’ to the ‘Procession of the Martyrs’ and enrolled their names in the list connoting martyrdom. Next year, 12 brethren of Shibir joined the Caravan of martyrdom. They were Shahid Mustafizur Rahman of Chuadanga, Ismail Hussen Shiraji of Sirajgonj, Khairul Islam of Cox’s Bazar, Ekramul Hoque and Alauddin of Feni, Moinul Islam of Lalmonirhat, Anwar Hussain of Chittagong, Akhtarul Kabir of Jessore, Fazle Elahi of Lakkhipur studying at Kamil level, Abdul Karim of Sylhet, Shawkat Hussen Talukdar of Barishal and Monjurul Kabir of Momenshahi. Shahid Shah Alam, Hasan Jahir Oliar, Abdul Khaleq Hamid, Muhammad Wahid, Golam Jakaria and Shahjahan studying at HSC level, Joinal Abedin Azad and Aminur Rahman fired by the terrorists of Chhatra League in Islamic University accepted martyrdom in 1996.
3 brethren were martyred in 1997 and 5 in ’98. Enamul Hoque Dudu of Sylhet, Jibair Hussain of Tangail and Muhibul Karim Siddiquee of Hathajari were martyred in 1999. On 17th August of the same year, the terrorists of Chhatra League, by beating with hammers, ruthlessly martyred Ahmad Jaid, a sweet-voiced class ten student. Kamal Hussain and Mahmudul Hasan of Lakkhipur, Ansar Ullah Talukhdar and Rahim Uddin of Chittagong, Ali Mustafa of Satkhira and Abdul Munim Belal of Sylhet joined the Caravan of Martyrs at the end of the year. Shahid Salah Uddin, Khairul Islam and Jahangir Alam Sabuj enrolled their names in ‘Shahidi Scripture’ in ink of their blood shed.
The event of martyrdom (Shahadat) is very typical in Islamic movement. It is fortunate enough to get martyred to make the journey of this Movement speedier. For this, the stream of martyrdom of Islami Chhatrashibir remained ceaseless till today. Following this ceaseless flow, Abdus Shakur, an HSC result-expectant student of Chanpainababgonj, Jahangir Alam of Rajshahi, Rafiqul Alam of Satkhira, Ibrahim Chowdhury Monjur, a class nine student of Comilla, and Nijam Uddin, an HSC result-expectant of Noakhali, were martyred in 2001. By daring to protest misconduct with schoolteachers and stalking female students, Belal Hussen, a class ten student of Moulavibazar, and Mustafizur Rahman Mostaque, an Alim first year student of Pabna, faced martyrdom in 2002. In 2003, Shafiqur Rahman Shimul was shot martyred in the Polytechnic College of Kushtia for his opinion in favor of merit-based admission system and Almas Mia of Moulavibazar was also shot martyred by the terrorists while performing ‘Salah’ in the college Mosque. In Kajla gate of Rajshahi University, Saifuddin of Bogra was so injured that his head was pounded with hammers and rods and, after long three months, on 24th April, 2004, he tasted nectar of martyrdom abed in the hospital.
Shahid Rezbul Hoque Sarkar Plabon who secured GPA-5.00 in his SSC exam is another Shibir activist who fell victim to the brutality of the ‘Batil’ force. Born in Palashbari of Gaibanda, Rezbul Hoque Plabon had passed away before his excellent result was published. Before he receives his marvelous result, his body and head were pounded by the repeated hits of weapons and he was eventually martyred on 15th June, 2005. In the same year, Raihan Khondokar of Momenshahi and Shoeb Ahmad Dulal of Sylhet were martyred. The utmost instance of brutality in Bangladesh’s history found its way on 28th October, 2006. The whole world got dumbfounded that day to see the pathetic sight of cruel barbarism against humanity. On the road of Paltan in capital city Dhaka, Shibir men were killed and danced on just the way how snakes are beaten to death. Such activities only suit the hangdog beasts. 2 Shibir leaders were martyred due to terrible attack of human animals holding boat hooks, oars and fire-arms in hands on the program of Jamat-e Islami held on the occasion of completion of five years’ term of the four party alliance government. They were Shahid Mujahidul Islam and Hafez Golam Kibria Shipon. Following the same event, Rafiqul Islam of Kurigram, Abdullah Al-Faisal of Narayangonj, Muhammad Shahjahan of Comilla and Saifullah Muhammad Masum of Sabujbagh, Dhaka, who was abed in the hospital after sustaining injury, fell prey to those ‘beasts’. In the mid of the year, on 17th June, Shafayet Ullah Bhuiyan of Shitakunda was martyred due to his protest against anti-societal activities. Though no events of martyrdom took place in 2007 and 2009, two brethren of Shibir fell prey to the cruelty of Chhatra League, the satellite student organization of Awami League, just after Awami League-backed grand alliance government came to power via blueprint of vote-rigging in the general polls of 2009. On 9th March of the cited year, Hafez Ramjan Ali, a talented student of Jamalpur, sustained, having been abducted earlier, inhuman injury administered by sharp weapons and was thrown on the railway allowing the train to run over him leaving two of his legs detached. This way he was martyred. On 11th March, Chhatra League raided the rally in Rajshahi University Campus launched on the occasion of “Martyrs’ Day”. On 13th March, crazy Chhatra League with the help of terrorists from outside and Police force martyred Sharifujjaman Nomani, Shibir Secretary of Rajshahi University Branch, with large choppers dividing his head into two pieces and cutting fingers of the right hand. Three more names were added to the queue of the martyrs in 2010. On 8th February, Faruq Hussen, a senior of Math Department at Rajshahi University and so-called Chhatra League activist, lost his life due to Chhatra League’s inter-party rivalry. But the onus for this murder was imposed on the shoulders of “ever-oppressed” Chhatrashibir with a view to materializing the blueprint of the government-leaning party. As a result, by two days only, two of our beloved brothers turned into corpses. The Police fired at and killed Hafizur Rahman Shahin, the only son of his parents and a meritorious senior of Political Science Department at Rajshahi University, when he was in his friend’s home in Chanpainababgonj. Chhatra League slit the throat of Mohiuddin Masum, a brilliant senior of the Department of Political Science at Chittagong University, with sharp weapons. Harunur Rashid Kaisar, another Shibir leader and meritorious student of Chittagong University, was abducted from the shuttle train and later on found killed throat-slit.
By this time, as many as 139 youths were added to the Caravan of martyrs of Chhatrashibir inspired by Hazrat Hamza (May Allah be pleased with him). The armed killers tried to destroy the great caravan named Islami Chhatrashibir which is a nurture centre for bold soldiers of Islam. But could anybody defeat those who prefer death to life? No, nobody could do this ever; not even in Badr, Uhud, Hunain, Tabuk, Sindhu and the green land of this Bengal. The queue of the caravan is expanding day by day and the ‘Batil’ force is also increasing in malice and grudge. But we do believe that the land of this Bengal has been and will also be more and more fertile by blessings of blood of martyrdom and thus, one day, the golden sun of Islamic revolution will rise in the eastern horizon of Bangladesh. But what was the offence of those who met martyrdom? They were not martyred due to any conflict of their personal interest. The only offence they committed is that they believed in Allah, Exalted in Power, Worthy of all Praise. The queue of the ‘living’ martyrs in this caravan of martyrdom is not less long. Many are still living sub-human life having lost their hands, legs, eyes and other parts of the body. Even so they are not distressed in the least, nor are they disappointed. Bulletins, pamphlets etc are usually published after each event of martyrdom and violence. Finally in 1992, a booklet titled “Roktakto Jonopod” containing all the scattered mementos of the martyrs was published. Now the number of martyrs rose to a degree. To meet the demands of time, some urged to publish a memoir of the martyrs. Driven by such urge, at first a book named “Sriti Omolin” containing the events of martyrdom of first 30 martyrs was published. Hopefully this book will last as an evidentiary document of our bloodstained history, sharpen the sensation of the generation oblivious of history and infuse new inspiration in them. A good number of events of terrorism and oppression are embodied herein along with the events of 30 martyrs. A small profile of the whole picture of martyrs’ lives is drawn in this book. Now we feel need to further compile a book in greater volume.
The present scenario of Bangladesh predicts that terrorism in progress here is not to be easily combated. The bar of terrorism is very typical to the way of Islamic Movement aiming at victory of Islam. If this is true, many more are sure to turn into corpses of martyrs. May Allah accept all our efforts and grant martyrs the highest status of martyrdom. Ameen!!!
